You know what book I really enjoyed? The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (read here). I read it about 5 years ago and I really should read it again. It takes turns in the plot you won’t predict, is filled with fantastical character’s, and all the character’s are nice and complex.
Probably my favorite part of this book is the actual book, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” described in the novel. Why you may ask? It’s because it probably would be my favorite book if it actually did exist. The beautiful neon letters scribing “Don’t Panic” on its front cover…. useful knowledge…. quite portable. What more could a nerd want?
I’ve daydreamed to elaborate on what I remember the book to be like, and have come out with what I think it would be like. Well, first of all, I would have the cover be made of a black, soft, thick, durable leather which would not only be pleasing to observe, but also a book that you would want to grasp all the time (not just out of love for its contents). The cover would also be fairly weather resistant and wouldn’t wear out quickly. This would make the owner feel comfortable carrying it around on their numerous adventures. The pages, of course, would also be splashed with a waterproof coating.
I’m fairly sure the in the novel this book is present in, it states “The Hitchhiker’s Guide []” is digital, but I resent this. I would prefer the book has pages… so why not digital pages? The book, after all, is futuristic! You speak the subject you wish to read about, and the book could automatically turn to such page for you. Each page would also have moving pictures…like something out of Harry Potter.
Finally, I think the content must be slightly over-viewed. This book has all the knowledge known to an inter-galactic citizen. It tells the reader: all the ways to make peace with all the different cultures/races in the galaxy, all about each culture, the different ways to survive if caught in multiple sticky situations, history of the universe, how to speak all the languages of the universe, etc… Probably like a portable, internet-free Wikipedia that had moving pictures, was a book, and covered the entirety of the universe.
Imagine the possibilities if only we had such an epic book. We can only dream of such wonders… for now. I could say we’ll probably have these in the future, but look how thy predicted the future in the 60s and stuff?Where’s the hovercraft I’m supposed to own? Ah well, after all, imagination is a cool creation. Something that controls the nation. Gives us great sensation.
