I know, I know, that genre of angry, rebel music that the minority likes. Unfortunately, I fall in that minority and punk rock is my favorite genre of music. I’ll tell you why; the lyrics have meaning (and more than just about sex and partying), it has variety (sorry techno and pop, you all sound fairly similar sometimes), and sometimes you just aren’t in the mood to listen to extremely happy music like “I’d like to teach the world to sing”.
Today I’d like to share a few of my favorite punk rock/ heavier rock favorites:
Please keep in mind there is swearing in these songs so if you are uncomfortable with that, you are warned! I ALSO HAVENT WATCHED THE VIDEOS SO BE WARNED! (Just listen :P)
Down with the Sickness
This is one of my recently-added songs to my favorites. This is a more metal song than punk, but the guitar is amazing and I find that style of singing extremely difficult, and therefore impressive.
This song doesn’t have the best sound quality to it, but the lyrics behind it I find quite intriguing:
“The more you suffer the more it shows you really care, right?”
“I know I’m being used, but it’s ok because I like the abuse”
“It happens more than I like to admit”
The lyrics are also clearly slightly depressing.
Ah Billy Talent, a classic. Billy Talent is the favorite band of many people I know. I’m not surprised. Lyrics, sound, and subject are all present in the good quality sector. Here are my two favorite songs by them:
My Chemical Romance
A recent add for me, this band has a song that rocks my mind. This is a rebellion song that will tie into a rant that I will post in the near future on the blog.
Oh good lord, THIS IS MY FAVORITE. Green Day is holding on my heart like a hand grenade. Right now they are by far the best band in my books. They sing meaningful songs, have genius lyrics, have GREAT sound, have a variety of different sounding songs…. if you don’t like one thing about a song by them, you usually like another aspect. I’ll show you a few songs; please keep in mind I may show you a few hardcore fan songs instead of the general public-liked songs. 😛
These are songs from a bunch of their albums, although if I was to recommend any, I would say go take a listen to American Idiot. This album is described as a “punk rock opera”, which tells the story of a boy who runs away from home, his journey, and his return home. It is an amazing and touching album (or so I find). Yu really have to pay attention to the lyrics for the full effect.
I hope you can also join me on a journey to increase your music taste and enjoy all styles of the art of music!
