Be it for people or inanimate objects, naming things is always a fun thing to do. This post will be a group of tangents so I don’t think there will be much paragraph structure, or at least not in great spots. I apologize ahead of time.
Now, I have mentioned before that I like to nickname people in my contacts list on my cellular device. These names don’t always transfer into everyday life, but it is fun when a friend takes your phone and finds that “Pikachu” or “Lord Voldemort” has texted you. It also saves you from getting bored with your contacts list or gives you something real to do in awkward situations.
Giving secret nicknames is also quite interesting, I suppose. You can talk about “David” when you are actually talking of someone named “Zack” for example. This can stop mutual friends from listening to carefully to a conversation if you were, say, talking about the surprise party you are planning or something. Anyway, it is helpful at times.
Now nicknaming inanimate objects is a great past time. I’m not talking about the typical name your teddy bear thing, I mean your computer or your imagination. For example, my two computers are named “Harry Potter” and “Harold”, and I constantly refer to my imagination as the “Imaginatorium” (yes, I just made a reference for those who have seen the movie).
Taking that kind of nicknaming to a whole other level is giving names to objects you don’t know the name of. For example, you know those random wild flowers that grow on everyone’s lawn? Observe:
Well, my friend and I didn’t remember what they were called a while back, so we decided to make up a name we could use. It ended up being a decision between “Arwen flowers” (like in Lord of the Rings) or “Lord Voldemort flowers” (because they match his skin). We decided on the last one. Yes, I do now know their real name (Field Bindweed or Convolvulus arvensis… It was much more difficult than it should have to find that out too.) but I still prefer to call them our made-up name. It’s just more fun that way.
Have you nicknamed random things before?
